Show Shots: Saul Williams, The Duke Spirit, Witch w/J. Mascis!

Before we attempt to fulfill our lifelong dream of seeing The Clipse immediately after seeing Motorhead, I present these captured images from the first day of the SxSW music festival.

The day started with Zombie Eaters—ie: The Sword channeling their love of Faith No More—with a half-hour cover set of damn-near the entire Real Thing album. (Video is forthcoming!)

From there, it was a steady diet of Swedish stoner rock, Brit indie rock and even a stop at America’s Def Jux showcase. Below is some photographic evidence:

Exclusive SXSW 2008 Interactive Wrap-Up And Music Preview

Less than 24 hours to go before we touch down in Austin and the feeling around here is positively electric. We can’t wait to get out on on 6th Street and soak up the hip, cool music and the warm Texas rain (no worries; apparently Zappos.com is handing out free slickers to grinning white people). And then of course, there are our two big parties that we must plug: MAKE FUNNY NOT WAR on Friday night at Esther’s and MESS WITH TEXAS 2 on Saturday at Waterloo Park.

But what about right now? SXSW 2008 Interactive just ended and our very own Sane Dave was in attendance. We sat down with him today over Skype to get an earful of what he learned and what we can expect on the Music side of the event when we arrive tomorrow.

Podcast Wednesday: Dave Hill, Gibby Haynes, School Of Rock

I was just recently in New York over the weekend and checked out Dave Hill’s band, Children of the Unicorn at The Highline Ballroom. I was excited to see that the headliners were Gibby Haynes with the School of Rock All Stars, playing Butthole Surfers songs.

As you can see, it was pretty awesome.

Afterwards, I managed to talk Dave and a some fellow comedian friends to go get some wings and talk some shop.

Watch & Listen: Bearforce1

What’s that? Do we detect an ever-so-faint blip on our gaydar? Is that an ever-so-slight tremor in our gaytrix? Yes, yes. There it is. Something pulsing. Something throbbing. Just below our beltline. Can’t quite make it out, but it sounds…like…house music. And it seems to be coming from these robust, young gentlemen…

Bearforce1? What is that all about? Do they have something to do with training animals to fly airplanes?

Watch & Listen: Tobacco

We’ve recently taken to watching this video every morning in order to get our mouths all limbered up. You know, for whatever the day may bring: chewing, talking, breathing, ____________ (insert disgusting verb here). Also, we love Richard Simmons from the bottoms of our black, black hearts.

A guy from Black Moth Super Rainbow called Tobacco has a new solo DVD coming out called “F*cked Up Friends.” This is the video for the track “Hawker Boat.”

viva la musica

hey. hello. i am a really big proponent of music in our lives. most of my friends are avid music supporters as well. i’ve one dear friend who has probably close to a hundred compact discs! his collection is exhaustive in it’s bredth. say you wanna hear some classic rock? he’s got three different Led Zeppelin albums on CD. say you’re in the mood for some modern pop - two Madonna albums on disc. modern rock? two Pearl Jam and Creed albums on disc, and so on. like i said, i’m a big believer in music’s importance in our culture and believe that it has medicinal powers as well, and like my friend, i embrace music of all stripes. speaking of stripes, i want to commence a series of posts on the variations of Seven Nation Army by the rock and roll group, The White Stripes. for reference, i’ll first show you the original -

and now the first response in a series i’m gonna call

The Seven Degrees of Seven Nation Army

here is wonderful and well executed example of what is called a “mash-up”. these are created by super humans by compiling and layering two or more audio and/or video tracks and having a good time watching and/or listening to it.
this is a bit of a cheat because it’s only based on our focus track, Seven Nation Army by the rock and roll group The White Stripes, but i do hope you benefit from the power and beauty of it as i have. It’s a combination of “Seven..” and The Eurythmics 80’s hit “Sweat Dreams are Maid of Mists”. it’s a great tune in and of itself, but this masher really laid it in perfectly here! enjoy!

until next time, I’ll see YOU at the rock show!

Watch & Listen: Tay Zonday

Boy, our buddy Mason Steinberg has really hooked us up this time. Mason does our favorite cat cop series, Whiskers and Mr. Fancy. But he also has impeccable taste in young singer-songerwriter/piano players with preternaturally deep voices.

Introducing Tay Zonday. One of his MySpace photos implores the world to “Get On Board With My Happiness.” His song “Chocolate Rain” is now on permanent rotation in my brain stem.

This one’s a deeper cut he did for a TurboTax song contest.
