Super Deluxe SXSW Party Announcement

sxsw_poster.png

It’s official. We’ve made a bright yellow poster with black writing on it. As you can see, that writing provides details about a party we’re throwing at this year’s South By Southwest music conference. It also elucidates the names of the entertainers that will be performing at the event as well as its exact location, date and time. Should you find yourself in Austin, Texas in the fair month of March, we suggest you stop by.

Update: Re-uploaded the poster to make a correction or two.

Up Invited We Were

New York is such a wonderful city to visit this time of year. The weather is perfect. The women are still all beautiful and summerfied. And the plane ride up is un-fucking-bearable.

Last night, we went to Ground Zero. Ground Zero of alternative comedy in New York City, that is. BOOOOM!!! OK, that’s not cool. There’s a lot of other places in Manhattan that probably would contest that they are the nexus of alt-comedy. But we weren’t at those places, were we? We were at Rififi’s in the East Village enjoying the crap out of Bobby Tisdale and Eugene Mirman’s weekly comedy show, Invite Them Up. If you love these guys’ Super Deluxe videos, chances are, Invite Them Up is where some of the original ideas for them were conceived and/or fleshed out. Or not. It’s a pretty “whatever the fuck goes” kind of night. Like when the multi-multi-talented Reggie Watts (seen here with fellow hair models) wrapped the evening up in a pretty bow with a beatbox-loop pedal-mindfuck improv performance that defies further categorization.

Here’s Super Deluxe stooge, Senatorturer, Bobby Tisdale and Invite Them Up co-producer and gracious hostess, Holly Schlesinger.

matt_bobby_holly.jpg

Of course, both Eugene and Bobby performed, as well as Adam Lowitt, Seth Herzog, Larry Murphy, and Chelsea Peretti. We got a ton of amazing footage of the performances that’s going up on the site and on the podcast soon. We also have to add that big, evil gentrification is threatening to shutdown Rififi, and consequently give Invite Them Up the boot. So, there’s going to be a special podcast about that.

And that’s not to mention all of the random folks that just happened to show up last night, like Zach Galifianakis (who was sporting those big headphones that everybody seems to be wearing these days).

zackg.jpg

Anywho, if you’ve made it this far down in our ramblings and you’re in Manhattan tonight, come and join us at the Upright Citizens Brigade theater. The all-lady comedy revue that is the Variety Shac (Chelsea Peretti, Andrea Rosen, et. al.) is performing. And we’re going to be front and center and paying lots of attention.

Monday Morning Checklist

pile.jpg

Good morning, Sunshine. Feeling a little blobbish today? How about a few more questions?

Did you leave the house last night? If so, did you go see Bob Odenkirk’s new movie, The Brothers Solomon? If not, are you ready to watch Bob Odenkirk pitch a movie to a greased-up, fake-tanned, short-attention-spanned version of himself? One that looks like this…

bob.png

Good. Because Mr. Odenkirk is taking a break from Comedy By The Numbers duties on Wednesday and premiering Bob Pitches A Movie on ye olde homepage.

Do you have basic cable? If so, did you watch the premiere of Adult Swim’s Lucy, Daughter Of The Devil last night? If not, you can watch it here. The reason we’re asking is because it’s funny. And it was created by the co-creator of Home Movies. And it stars Jon Benjamin (whose Super Deluxe premiere is imminent), Toddy Barry (ditto) and Eugene Mirman (who already works with us; duh).

Finally, do you have HBO? If so, did you watch the Curb Your Enthusiasm season premiere? Just checking. Don’t really have anything additional to say about it, except it’s called “Meet The Blacks.”

David Cross & Eugene Mirman Help Wed Pornographers??

What?! Wait, did we mention David Cross just signed a multi-trillion-dollar deal with Super Deluxe? We’re paying him in bullion for funny videos! Just you wait and see!! Did we also mention that Eugene Mirman’s new series, Know A State, has given us one of the most enlightening perspectives on Massachusetts since Good Will Hunting? And did we happen to tell you Eugene’s got a new video called The Adventures Of The Insane High Detective that will melt your prior notions of space and digital time?

Oh, and did you read the New York Times article about these two attending the nuptials ceremony of an indie-rock power couple??

Last Day To Speak Out Against Bullsh!t Proposals In NYC

E-MAIL JULIANNE CHO AT jcho@film.nyc.gov WITH YOUR COMPLAINTS!! TODAY IS THE LAST DAY NEW YORK CITY IS ACCEPTING COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC!!

Why? Because Mayor Bloomberg’s office has proposed some draconian new laws that would basically make it impossible for the average New Yorker to shoot photos and films in public places. Under the new rules, any group of two or more people using a handheld camera (still or video) for more than 30 minutes at a single location would have to get a permit and—this is one of the most insane aspects—would have to present proof of a whopping $1,000,000 in insurance.

Obviously, these proposals would affect a wide range of amateur filmmakers in New York—including a gaggle of Super Deluxe artists who are very dear to us! Folks like Olde English, the Post Show, Eugene Mirman, Dave Hill, Chelsea Peretti, Kurt & Kristen, Bobby Tisdale, Ben Schwartz and others.

Olde English, being the civic-minded comedy troupe that they are, made a call-to-action protest rap about the proposals that’s been making the media rounds.

What’s Next: Eugene Mirman’s New Series, Team Tiger Awesome’s Super Deluxe debut

Hello again, people of the Internet. Aren’t we having fun? Isn’t this comedy video thing a gas? Well, let me tell you, it’s about to get a whole lot more gassier around here.

How’s that? Well, the fucking hilarious Jon Benjamin will soon be doing videos for us. When he’s not too busy being sexy.

Aaaaand next week, Eugene Mirman puts Space Talk on hold to debut his new Super Deluxe series…

eugene.png

Yes, it’s called The Diary of a Lonely DJ (as if you couldn’t read that). And yes, it involves Eugene routinely bawling his BPM’s out over the existential angst of being a turntablist.

Also next week, we’re just giddy that Team Tiger Awesome will be making their SD debut. Mums the word on what they’re doing for us, but in the meantime, let us just revel in the masterpiece that put them on the Internet comedy map, 28 Day Slater…

Familiar Faces In HBO’s Flight Of The Conchords

“Palpable” is the best word to describe the buzz that’s been brewing over this new HBO series (what other word would you use?). Indeed, “New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk parody duo” appear to be up for the task of taking on America. The premiere is on June 17th, but they’ve already posted the series’ pilot online and it certainly is magical…

Now, if you’re saving your eyeballs for the official premiere night, let us just add that not one, but TWO of our favorite Super Deluxe stars make an appearance.

One is Eugene Mirman (seen here holding a faucet with the show’s stars, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement).

flight-eugene.png

The other is Kristen Schaal (seen here being her awesome self).

I also have it on good authority (?) that one of the “Conchords” cast members, Rhys Darby, is so funny, he routinely held up production on the set with his, well, funniness (seen here as the “Conchords” manager).
