Interview Watch 2008: Devin Flynn, Chelsea Peretti

Here’s to the fine art of letting other people do the interviews, then subsequently linking to said conversations.

Today, we’ve got a Super Deluxe artist two-fer: Devin Flynn in Vice London and Chelsea Peretti in a blog called Canned Thinking.

She Dated Ze Frank Too?!?!

Good god, Chelsea Peretti gets around. And with such a who’s who of utter randomness. First, it was Pras from The Fugees. Then there was that fling she had with comic legend, Jonathan Winters. And who could forget her recent three-way sexcapade with SNL’s Amy Poehler and Fred Armisen?

Well, now it appears Ms. All My Exes is attempting to resurrect her failed relationship with a one Ze Frank (seen here dislodging his arm from Chelsea’s skull?).

ze-frank.png

Yes, that’s THE Ze Frank. The Internet auteur who got all famous a few years back with this lil’ viral gem, and then promptly ascended to avant-online-comic genius status with the funniest website this side of Funny Or Die (heh). And then of course, there was his year-long Show that we’re sure you’re all familiar with. But just in case you’re not, it was brilliant (he actually requested fans to write the show for him). Here’s an episode from exactly one year ago today.

So, now that we’ve successfully proven that we indeed know who Ze Frank is (or at least took the time to Google him), we thought we’d also share this talk he gave at a 2004 TED conference. And we use “talk” in the loosest sense of the word.

Jonathan Winters: Officially The Oldest Person On Super Deluxe

This Sunday, the comic legend turns 82-years-old. To celebrate, he’s breaking Chelsea Peretti’s heart. That’s him in today’s premiere of All My Exes #4. He’s playing a doddering old guy named Lowell who also happens to be Chelsea’s oldest former boyfriend to date.

jonathan-winters-2.png

For those of you too young to know or care who Jonathan Winters is, that’s OK. He probably doesn’t give a shit. Safe to say, he’s too busy still being amazing. Just look at this book he wrote back in the day. We haven’t read it (we don’t read!), but just the title and cover alone make us want to date him:

jonathan-winters-1.jpg

And how about “art?” You guys like the “art,” right? Seriously, what former TV and movie star can you think of that’s plowing through his eigth decade on this planet doodling pictures called “A Long, Hard Climb, To Visit A Grave?” This is just a sample of his stuff on jonathanwinters.com:

And if you whipper-snappers still need further proof of this man’s genius, watch this interview he did with Santa Barbara public access queen, Connie Bryan. Itz sooo goooood.

Variety Shaced And Schwartzed

Sounds like some kind of Yiddish mash-up single. And it is! It’s coming out soon on #1 Hitzvah Records.

Oy. Kill me…

Last night, we chose not to divide our evening between the lotion aisles of the 8 different Duane Reades on Broadway. Instead, we headed over to the Upright Citizens Brigade theater in Chelsea to catch the Variety Shac girls in action. Sadly, Heather Lawless was absent. Something about getting married in North Carolina or something. We weren’t invited so we didn’t pay attention. But we did catch Chelsea Peretti’s stand-up as well as Andrea Rosen’s, which will be featured soon on a podcast/blog post. Here’s Andrea telling funnies about suicide.

Afterward, we got a chance to chat with the ladies about their DVD release. We bought a copy. So should you. Right here whenever they actually make it available there. And if you’re feeling jealous about all of our face time with Chelsea, Andrea and Shonali, don’t. Because we’ll be posting footage of that as well.

Later on, Mr. Rejected Jokes himself showed up, Ben Schwartz. Although the New York native was a little down about the Yankees defeat last night, he was able to muster enough strength for an exclusive interview with moi (which we’ll also be putting up shortly)…

schwartzarnold.jpg

…as well as a late night Rejected Jokes experiment on the mean streets of Manhattan. Freelance writing for SNL, Letterman and Adult Swim must be going to Ben’s head. Because he’s convinced that he can just stop people on their way to whatever 3 a.m. shamehole their going to, and brighten their lives with humor. Trust us, it didn’t work. We’ve got the proof, and that too is going to be tacked up to this here ding-dong site very shortly.

Next stop on our odyssey, we’re meeting Olde English in Madison Square park. For a rumble. Ciao!

“You Know Caribbean Men Don’t Eat Pussy”

What?! Who made that rule up? Francois “Papa Doc” Duvalier? Harry Belafonte? Does that apply to dudes in Florida too? Would the phrase “Tastes like jerk chicken” help this situation at all? And who made this sweeping declaration, anyways?

Why, none other than Prakazrel Samuel Michel in today’s premiere of Chelsea Peretti’s new series, All My Exes.

pras.png

Most of us know him as Pras. He’s also been a Fugee, a Ghetto Superstar and “Disco Boy” Tony C. (for those of you who actually saw Mystery Men). In All My Exes, he plays the first of Chelsea’s ex-boyfriends to be sat down for an uncomfortable on-camera chat about what went wrong in their relationship. Not to give too much away, but the breakup may have had something to do with his dietary restrictions.

Last Day To Speak Out Against Bullsh!t Proposals In NYC

E-MAIL JULIANNE CHO AT jcho@film.nyc.gov WITH YOUR COMPLAINTS!! TODAY IS THE LAST DAY NEW YORK CITY IS ACCEPTING COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC!!

Why? Because Mayor Bloomberg’s office has proposed some draconian new laws that would basically make it impossible for the average New Yorker to shoot photos and films in public places. Under the new rules, any group of two or more people using a handheld camera (still or video) for more than 30 minutes at a single location would have to get a permit and—this is one of the most insane aspects—would have to present proof of a whopping $1,000,000 in insurance.

Obviously, these proposals would affect a wide range of amateur filmmakers in New York—including a gaggle of Super Deluxe artists who are very dear to us! Folks like Olde English, the Post Show, Eugene Mirman, Dave Hill, Chelsea Peretti, Kurt & Kristen, Bobby Tisdale, Ben Schwartz and others.

Olde English, being the civic-minded comedy troupe that they are, made a call-to-action protest rap about the proposals that’s been making the media rounds.

Meet The Variety Shac Chics

So, I was just strolling around the Lower East Side the other day–eating gellato and trying not to be too annoyed with my buddy and his stupid, new iPhone–when all of a sudden I ran into an old friend (who thankfully wasn’t on an iPhone): Shonali Bhowmik.

Who’s that, you ask? Well, Shonali’s the lead singer of a wonderful band called Tigers & Monkeys. But she’s also one-fourth of the Variety Shac, an all-female comedy and music troupe out of New York that we can’t get enough of. That’s her on the far left.

variety-shac.png

While we’re at it, let’s just keep the introductions going: next to Shonali is Heather Lawless who we covet and who you may recognize from Bobby Tisdale’s “Bobby’s Beautiful Bed & Breakfast.”

Next to her is Ms. Chelsea Peretti who we don’t have to covet because she’s already ours!! Her “Making Friends” series was just the beginning of our beautiful relationship. Lately, she’s been working on some new Super Deluxe material as well as stuff for Adult Swim. And the buzz is only growing and growing.

And finally, next to Chelsea is Andrea Rosen who we also no longer have to covet because she has a new show coming up on Super Deluxe soon. It’s called “Standrea” and it’s about her and her boyfriend, Stan. To whet your appetite, here’s one of my favorite shorts with Andrea in it from the “Captains In Space” series…
